Depleted U13s Gain Superb Win
Alan Richards reports on a third straight win for his charges.
Penryn under 13s travelled to Tregorrick Park with a depleted team and came away with a victory but did not manage it alone. Due to a significant injury and unavailability issue Penryn arrived with only 10 players to face a much larger St Austell squad, who thankfully willingly lent some players to Penryn to enable all the players to have a competitive match, and that’s exactly what they got.
Despite the lack of players, the Penryn team still oozed quality and the biggest question initially was how would they cope with the situation, answer- very well. Penryn took the lead but soon after, the match was all square again and then St Austell took the lead, which was then reinforced.
As the game went on, no team took control and the score remained so close that no team could sit back and relax. The significant slope on the pitch could have helped the home team with that little bit of local knowledge but Penryn seemed to cope with it well.
In the final quarter of the match Penryn were given a few chances which they took very well with two breakaway scores going more or less the full length of the pitch which hurt the hosts in every way, and a final nail was hammered in just before the final whistle.
A cracking game of rugby may have seen the Borough Boys victorious, but it must be said that this would not have been achieved without the loan of some players. In particular, two props played the full match for Penryn, for which we are grateful, but when asked if they wanted to swap sides, they refused as they enjoyed playing alongside the new friends from Penryn, and for this we are proud.
