Penryn 10 v St Agnes 47
Written by Leigh Weaver
Sunday saw Penryn under 14’s start their season playing at home to St Agnes.
Penryn went into the game full of optimism after a good pre-season. While the game saw 7 x players out due to other commitments. Penryn welcomed debuts for Angus Williams, Milo Kemp & Joel Miller, the side also welcomed back Piran Glasby from a long layoff.
With Penryn’s vice-captain Jack Dunstan losing the toss St Agnes elected to kick. The early exchanges saw the Penryn pack dominate the rucks & the mauls, but St Agnes brand of running rugby saw them score two quick tries. Which were both converted. The home side then hit back which saw them dominate for large parts of the 1st half but only to fall short of the line. As the 1st half drew to a close the pack secured the ball & fed to Mackenzie Munns for the flanker to score Penryn’s first points of the match.
The second half saw Penryn start where they left off in the 1st half with the forwards dominating the set plays, however the back line struggled to make an impact with a well drilled St Agnes defense denying them space in which to operate in. With the forwards working hard created a slick move by moving the ball to the advancing full back which saw Ben Phillips burst through the St Agnes defense to score the home teams 2nd try of the game. As the game progressed St Agnes moved the ball & repeatedly stretched the Penryn defense, this resulted in the home side conceding a further 5 tries.
While it was disappointing for the team to lose their opening fixture of the season there were many positives to take from the game. Penryn dominated for long periods of the game, only for their final execution to let them down. Both sides competed very well, which resulted in a very enjoyable game of rugby. The new players have both settled into the group & teams ethos very well.
The team will look to work hard over the next week as they prepare to welcome Perranporth to the Memorial Ground on the 22nd October.
