Penryn Ladies Open With A Win Over Impressive Withycombe
Jessica Howell reports.
Penryn Ladies kicked off their campaign with a home game against Withycombe, who are a new team and in their first season of league rugby.
Given that, there were a lot of unknowns coming into this match!
The final score of 29-14 was a fantastic result for Penryn against a well-drilled and resilient team who will give many sides a good test this season.
Penryn started well, taking advantage of Withycombe's scattered defence and got two tries in quick succession within the opening fifteen minutes. Withycombe came back fighting hard. With strong runners and excellent support play combined with poor discipline from the home side, the girls in green hit back with two great team tries.
At half-time, Penryn were in the lead, but not with the sort of buffer we are used to.
In the second half, there were many scrums and players became to get tired, and as a result there were handling errors from both teams. Penryn's scrum was incredibly strong and was able to push Withycombe off the ball several times. Due to the increasing fatigue, Penryn's superior fitness began to tell and Borough began running from deep into space and able to kick forward to score further tries.
With that said, at no point did Withycombe give up, and they used their bench excellently to rest players. They fought incredibly hard until the final whistle. It was an outstanding first performance from Withycombe.
But Penryn Ladies triumphed, and started the season with a win. All the ladies did their club proud and credit to the try scorers Tanya Reed, Frankie Rickard, Sarah Stovell, Kayleigh Callaway and Kristen Davey. Frankie Rickard converted the tries.
To the players and coaches of Withycombe, I speak for our entire team when I say how much we are looking to the return fixture at the end of the season.
