Brilliant Borough Beat Bideford To Hit Top Spot!

Jessica Howell reports on Penryn Ladies success in Devon on Sunday.

Bideford Ladies have always given Penryn a real test, and Sunday was no exception.

The first half was uneventful with neither side managing to get on the scoreboard. Despite this, both teams played hard with the backs running good lines and keeping the ball alive, but with worsening conditions, the ball became difficult to move quickly around the field, so the forwards had to step up.

Going into the second half at 0-0, it was anyone's game. Honours were likely to go to the team who wanted it more. Fortunately, losing wasn't going to be an option for Penryn and, five minutes into the second half, prop forward Kaitlyn Bridge made a fantastic attack scoring under the posts which Janie Curnow easily converted.

Spurred on, and now on the front foot, Penryn's confidence increased. Playing quick expansive rugby, Penryn's backs took advantage of an overlap and Janie Curnow scored the try and promptly converted.

Fast paced play continued, but Bideford's defence held. The consistent line speed made it difficult for Penryn to exploit overlap or offload the ball in the tackle area. New Penryn Lady, Ro Gomez used her pace and change of direction to make a break on the wing. Unfortunately, Bideford's full-back caught Ro just before the try line, but Sarah Stovell managed to convert Ro's hard work into five points.

Bideford's forwards were consistent and in the closing moments of the game, they set up a driving maul ten metres from their try line. With the try line in sight, Bideford's whole pack got involved and scored a fantastic team try. Credit to the ladies in white and cherry red for never giving up.

Thank you to Bideford Ladies for hosting us and for making us play the level of rugby we know we are capable of. I know I speak on behalf of the entire team when I say we're looking forward to the return fixture at The Memorial Ground. Up The Borough!
